Recent Case Study: Replacement of 4 Variable Frequency Drives at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore MD.

Problem: The hospital's primary and secondary water pumps were controlled by four 1980s vintage Robicon drives. Two 60HP and two 200HP 480V AC each with bypass capabilities. Due to their age, these drives were prone to failure resulting in them having to be run in bypass for significant periods while various components were repaired off-site. Although running in bypass met the water demand of the hospital, the pumps were constantly at full speed which was uneconomical and put stress on the operating machinery.

Solution: Replacement of the drives was authorized by the hospital and in this instance Test Point decided to utilize Cutler Hammer SV9000 drives complete with bypass contactors. Since we are not a vendor, we are not tied to one particular manufacturer and can therefore choose a drive best suited to the requirements of the customer. The SV9000 drives are state-of-the-art, easily programmable and have a comprehensive option list.

Test Point replaced the four existing drives in four days during normal working hours. The drives were replaced so that at no time was the water demand of the hospital compromised. The drives were tied into the existing Johnson Controls building management system so that monitoring and control of the system could be done from several remote locations. Included in our installation package was complete removal and off-site disposal of the old drives, installation of the new drives including reworking of all power and control wiring and conduits, and full training for the maintenance staff.
